Mumtaz Begum, a mother of three children, died while delivering for the fourth time at an unregistered Shamim Pharmacy in Gonsaiganj, Bhogdaburi Union, Domar Upazila, Nilphamari District. Locals claimed that Mumtaz Begum’s death occurred after the caretaker of Shamim Pharmacy, Sweety Begum, failed to stop the bleeding of Mumtaz Begum after normal delivery at 10 am on Saturday. Mumtaz Begum is the wife of Abdus Subhan of Sabujpara village of Bhogdaburi Union. Locals also said that Sweety Begum has been making normal deliveries by stealing huge sums of money from her unregistered Shamim Pharmacy for a long time. Previously, several mothers and children died while doing normal delivery in that pharmacy. As the concerned authorities did not intervene in this matter, Sweety Begum is recklessly carrying out her activities with the help of local village doctors. Sweety’s husband Moklesar Rahman said that before Sweety touched the patient, Mumtaz Begum gave birth. She was sent to Upazila Health Complex for advanced treatment when she developed convulsions after childbirth. But he denied bleeding. Upazila Health Complex official Dr. Raihan Bari said that if the victim’s family receives a complaint, necessary action will be taken against the pharmacy subject to investigation.
