Farmers of Kurigram are dreaming of corn cultivation.

Saifur Rahman Shamim, Kurigram :

Farmers are dreaming of corn cultivation in Kurigram.  If the weather is favorable, they are expecting a bumper crop of maize this year.  However, they demand an increase in the cost of production by increasing the price of oil, fertilizers and pesticides.

According to the information of the District Agriculture Extension Department, the target of maize cultivation in the district has been set at 13 thousand hectares this year.  Which is more than 60 hectares compared to last year. It can be seen on the surface, the pastures are covered with green leaves of corn.  Bigha after bigha, farmers are busy cultivating corn along with other crops in bigha land.  They tend to cultivate maize as it costs less than other crops. Jewel Ahmed, a farmer of Kadamtala village of Sadar Upazila, said that this year we have cultivated maize on five bigha of land.  7-8 thousand rupees are spent on maize cultivation per bigha of land.  If the yield is good, 30-32 maunds of maize are available per bigha.  He said that 10-12 thousand taka will be gained per mind.

Md.  Another farmer named Sekender Ali said, every year we cultivate different types of rapeseeds, lentils, almonds and potatoes in the paddy fields.  I cultivated corn for the first time this year.  By the type of plants, it seems that there will be a good yield from corn this time.  He also said that maize cultivation requires less fertilizers and pesticides than other crops including Eri-Boro.  There is no additional hassle till harvesting.  Due to low cost of production, double profit in this cultivation. Biplab Kumar Mohant, Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Department, said that incentives are being given to 4,500 farmers in the district.  Fertilizer and seeds will be given to them. He also said that corn has been planted on 9,600 hectares of land so far.  Hopefully farmers will be more profitable than last year in corn cultivation.
