Police have arrested five people for allegedly killing Awami League leader Osman Gani by hacking and severing the veins of his hands and feet in Natore’s Lalpur. On Monday (September 4, 2023), Natore was sent to Jail Hajj by the court. Qutb Uddin, the nephew of the deceased Osman Gani, filed a case on Sunday night naming 25 people and accusing 5/6 unknown people.

Five people were arrested in that case. The arrested are Md. Mohsin Alam (28), son of Mokhlesur Rahman of village Pukurpara Chilan of Kadimchilan Union of Ejahar, Md. Mokhlesur Rahman, son of deceased Taib Ali Sardar, Md. Abdul Latif Pramanik (55), son of deceased Nasim Uddin Pramanik of Dangapara village and accused Duaria. Md. Nadeem (34), son of Naushad Ali of the village, Md. Zakirul Islam, son of Afsar Ali.

It is to be noted that on Sunday (September 3, 2023) morning, Awami League leader Osman Gani Pramanik (45) was publicly hacked to death in Dangachilan village of Kadimchilan Union. He was the prime accused in the murder case of the former chairman of the local Union Parishad (UP). Osman Gani was a resident of the same village and was the General Secretary of Ward No. 5 Awami League. Last January, former UP Chairman and Awami League leader Abdur Razzak Mridha was hacked by miscreants during the day and seriously injured. He later died while undergoing treatment at the hospital. Osman Gani was the main accused in the case.

Gani’s relatives alleged that Gani was hacked to death in broad daylight due to the murder case. In this regard, Gani’s brother Afshar Ali said, “Former UP Chairman Abdur Razzak Mridha was murdered in January of this year. Gani was made the prime accused in the murder case. We are Awami League and followers of current Member of Parliament (NATER-1) Shahidul Islam. On the other hand, the attackers are followers of former MP Abul Kalam. Ever since Mridha’s murder, his followers have been threatening us with murder and injury. On Sunday morning, former UP members of the opposition, Rezaul Karim, Saiful Islam and some others attacked and killed my brother.

We want exemplary punishment for them. According to the police and witnesses, Osman Gani left the house at around 7 am yesterday. Later drank tea at a local tea shop. After leaving there, Gani was surrounded and beaten up. In this, the veins of his hands and feet were cut. The attackers fled leaving him in this condition. Gani later died on the spot due to excessive bleeding. Akram Hossain, general secretary of the Union Chhatra League, said that the attackers were opponents of Osman Gani.

He heard that the attack was led by former UP member Rezaul. No case has been filed in the police station till yesterday evening in the case of Gani’s murder. The officer in charge (OC) of Lalpur police station confirmed the matter. Ujjal Hussain He said, they arrested those 5 people for their involvement in the murder. Later on Monday, the arrested were sent to jail through the court. Operation is on to arrest more accused persons. Police have been deployed in the area since the incident to avoid any untoward situation.
