Syed Haque Mela on Sabyasachi writer’s birthday.

Saifur Rahman Shamim, Kurigram :

Today is the 87th birthday anniversary of Sabyasachi writer Syed Shamsul Haque.  For a long time in his life, he has worked in the diverse world of literature and art, including poetry, song, drama, story-novel, film script writing.  Fluency in all branches of literature has earned this man the title of Sabyasachi. Syed Shamsul Haque was born on December 27, 1935 in Kurigram.  On the occasion of his birthday, a day-long ‘Syed Haque Mela 2022’ has been organized in the Kurigram Government College premises around the poet’s tomb.  Several programs have also been undertaken in Dhaka and ancestral home Kurigram.

Yusuf Alamgir, convenor of Syed Shamsul Haque Memorial Council, said that on the occasion of the poet’s birthday, the formal inauguration will be held after laying wreaths at the poet’s tomb in the premises of Kurigram Government College.  Besides, writers and poets conference, written literature reading, poetry reading by Syed Haque, photo exhibition of Syed Haque, music performance written by the poet and book fair will be held throughout the day. He also said that 87 lanterns will be flown at night to celebrate the poet’s birthday.  Famous artistes will perform the famous song written by him at that time, ‘Hayre Mansoor Ranang Phanus, Dum Furaile Dhoos’.  Also, on the occasion of Syed Haque’s birthday, a special issue of Littlemag ‘Methojan’ will be published on this day.

Syed Haque II, the only son of the poet, said that the Syed Haque fair is being held in Kurigram for one day.  However, we hope that the scope of this fair will increase in the future.  The fair will be held for three to seven days. On April 15, 2016, poet Syed Shamsul Haque was taken to London due to lung problems.  Tests at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London diagnosed him with lung cancer.  There the doctors gave him chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

He was brought back to the country on 2 September 2016 after four months of treatment.  He breathed his last on 27th September 2016 (12 Ashwin 1423 Bangabd) at the United Hospital in Dhaka.  The next day, Wednesday, September 28 (12 Ashwin 1423 Bangla), his body was buried in the grounds of Kurigram Government College after the first janaza at Channel I Television’s Tejgaon square at 10 a.m., the second janaza at Dhaka University Central Mosque at 2 p.m., and the third janaza at Kurigram Government College grounds in the afternoon.
