National Freedom Fighters Council (NFFC-JAMUCA) cannot cancel gazetted freedom fighters after verification: High Court.
Suman Khan :
National Freedom Fighters Council (NFFC-JAMUCA) cannot cancel gazetted freedom fighters after verification. yesterday (Thursday 5th January) High Court bench comprising of Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Ebadat Hossain passed the verdict. The High Court mentioned in this judgment that JAMUKA has no jurisdiction to decide to cancel the gazette of gazetted freedom fighters through sub-committee. There is no right to cancel the gazette because of the powers conferred by section 7 of the National Freedom Fighters Council Act, 2002. That is why the decision was canceled on April 7, 2016. the In 2003, a 7-member vetting committee formed by the government prepared a list of 472 Liberation War veterans. In the light of the committee’s recommendation, later in 2005, the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has gazetted 22 naval commandos as freedom fighters and has been giving them state honorarium in recognition of the freedom fighters. But due to the arbitrary activities of some overzealous persons, those Naval Commando Freedom Fighters were again brought under scrutiny and accordingly Jamuka took a decision on April 7, 2016 (35th meeting) for 24 Naval Commando Freedom Fighters including 22 writ petitioners. The High Court overruled the decision of the 35th meeting of the Freedom Fighters Council on 7 April 2016.
