Compared to Pepper and Mustard in Sariakandi, Bumper Yield of Maize is Expected Again This Year.

R.A Rashed, Sariakandi (Bogura) Correspondent :

In Sariakandi, Bogura, a record amount of land has been cultivated this year due to expected prices along with the bumper yield of maize last year. Farmers have cultivated early maize this year on the land that has been lying fallow for years in different pastures of the Yamuna Bangali river.
Samad Mondal, a farmer of Shonpacha Char of Karnibari Union, said, I planted corn on 15 bighas of land. This year, I have cultivated corn in advance on 17 bigha land, so that I can be more profitable than last year. Farmer Ekabbar of Dhantala village of Sadar Union said that last year too, I got a lot of profit by cultivating hybrid pepper. For this reason, this year too, I cultivated pepper in 5 bigha land. So far, I have collected and sold chillies in the market four times. Got a pretty good price. Hope to be more profitable in the future.
Mustard farmer Abul Kalam of Devdanga village of Karnibari union said that last year he was able to produce 8 to 10 tons of mustard per bigha of land. So this time also I cultivated mustard on three bigha land with more care.
Billal of Dakatmara Charer of the same union said that this year we have cultivated corn in advance on 5 and a half bigha land. A higher yield than last year is expected, as well as higher prices for early corn.
According to the information of Sariakandi Upazila Agriculture Office, the target of maize cultivation last year was 3 thousand hectares. 3 thousand 450 hectares were cultivated. This year, the target of maize cultivation was 3 thousand 500 hectares, 8 thousand 260 hectares were cultivated. However, there is still a great interest in maize cultivation among the farmers. Maize is usually planted in the field from the month of October in Rabi season. Sariakandi Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdul Halim said that this year the upazila has planted twice as much (8,260 hectares) of land as compared to last year. At the same time, pepper has been cultivated on 3 thousand 170 hectares of land, mustard on 2 thousand 850 hectares of land and wheat on 860 hectares of land.
