Khulna Belgium’s Queen Matilda Marie Christine Zillain visited the Jhulantapara area of Sutarkhali Union of Khulna’s coastal Dakop Upazila, which is affected by the impact of climate change, on Wednesday afternoon. During this time, he exchanged views with the local people of Jhulantapara and got an idea about the life-struggle, problems and prospects of the people living in the coastal area of Khulna. The Rani was informed in detail about the ongoing activities of the LOGIC project funded by the UNDP, UNCDF, European Union and Swedish Government and under the local government department of Bangladesh so that the poor and marginalized people of the southern region are not displaced due to the impact of climate change. Earlier Rani landed at Nalian Secondary School ground in Sutarkhali by helicopter from Dhaka. Later, Sutarkhali observed the water collection activities of the local people from the water treatment plant established under the logic project under the local government department with the financial support of the European Union and UNCDF on the ground floor of the Union Parishad building and had a brief discussion with the beneficiaries of the water treatment plant. During the exchange of views, the beneficiaries highlighted the scarcity of potable water in the past due to the salinity problem in the southern part of the country. They said that earlier women had to go five to six kilometers to collect drinking water for the family from rural sources, but after the new water treatment plant, fresh water without salt is easily available. Rani left Sutarkhali for Dhaka by helicopter from Nalian Secondary School grounds in the afternoon. During the Queen’s visit, Minister of Information and Broadcasting. Hasan Mahmud was with him in administrative duties as Minister in Waiting. In response to questions from local journalists, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting said that Bangladesh is one of the countries affected by climate change. No one can imagine the harmful effects of climate change on the entire coast of Bangladesh without being here. Every year there are floods, tidal waves, which are our constant companion. The Queen of Belgium is here to see for herself how we are dealing with the impact of climate change and to speak to the people here. Khulna Deputy Commissioner Khandkar Yasir Arefin, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mahbub Hasan welcomed the Queen at Sutarkhali in Dakop Upazila of Khulna.
