Preparation of golpata extraction in Chandpai range of Sundarbans.

Md. Shamim Hossain –

Khulna Golpatha collection season-2023 has started in Chadpai range of Mongla East Forest Division. On Tuesday (January 24) at 11 am, a discussion meeting was held at Chandpai Ranch office in East Sundarbans with Bawalis regarding permission to enter Sundarbans. On January 29, Golpata extraction will be officially started with permission from the forest department. Therefore, all the rules and laws related to the forest department are explained to the boatmen and bawalis for collecting golpa through this program. On January 29, pass-permits will be given to bawalis to collect golpatas. Forest Chadpai range sources said that this year, from January 29 to March 31, Bawalis will collect leaves from designated spots in the Sundarbans for two months from Kupp No. 2 and 3 in the Chadpai range of East Sundarbans. Adequate security measures will be taken by the forest department of Bawalid along with the successful completion of the golpata harvesting season. Sundarban Chandpai station officer Obaidur Rahman said that the target of 7 thousand quintals (17 thousand 500 maunds) of golpata extraction in the Chandpai range of East Sundarbans has been set. So this year the revenue per quintal has been fixed at Rs 60 and Rs 69 including VAT. A boat can carry a maximum of 200 quintals (500 maunds) of Golpata. If the excess is carried, the bawalis will collect double the additional revenue per quintal from the government fixed amount. He said that the spot for extracting golpata has been determined from two compartment areas in the Chadpai range of East Sundarbans. Out of this, farmers will collect 4 thousand quintals from Shela Nadi 2nd compartment and 3 thousand quintals from Chadpai 3rd compartment. The Bawalis cannot collect any other wood from the Sundarbans except Golpata. Also read: Sundarbans fishermen in fear of forest bandits Nayan Bani If anyone collects wood illegally, they will have to pay a fine through COR for each hetal, geva or other wood, 25 rupees for kachipata (yellow colored mize leaves), 25 rupees for thek leaves. Besides, a fine of Tk 100 for cutting and destroying a tree, Tk 150 for destroying a tree, and a fine for cutting, catching, killing, or carrying wild animals or forest law will be charged as per government regulations. Many people including Bawali Abbas and Nasir of Ghol area of Mongla Coastal Jayamoni said that the quantity of leaves in the wells of Chadpai range of Sundarbans is very low. There is no demand for gol leaves among the people, the revenue is high, the prices of goods are increasing, the wages of the leaf cutters are high. So the number of boats is less this year. Newly there has been an increase in the production of Dakat in the Sundarbans, so there is less demand for leaf collection among people. Chadpai range officer. Shahidul Islam said, from the end of January to the month of March is the harvesting season of Sundarbans. The Bawalis were supposed to pass early this month, but this time they passed very late. This will reduce their collection of golpatha. Due to this, the revenue collection of lakhs is also likely to be less. Even so, the forest department will take necessary measures to collect revenue and achieve the target this year.

The light of life of 10-year-old Sohagi was extinguished at the Sheikh Russell Child Training Center in Khulna.

Md. Shamim Hossain –

Khulna The light of life of 10-year-old Sohagi was extinguished at the Sheikh Russell Child Training Center in Khulna. The family claims that the allegations of torture and non-treatment are against the authorities. It is known that 10-year-old student Sohagi Akhter (9) died mysteriously at the Sheikh Russell Child Training and Rehabilitation Center located next to Gallamari Badg Bhoomi, Khulna, run by the Department of Social Services. His death was reported at 8 am on Tuesday. The child’s family claimed that Sohagi was tortured and died without treatment after falling ill. Sohagi Akhter is the daughter of Sohag Molla and Rozina Begum, residents of Block C Colony where the incident took place, No. 5 Fish of Khulna city. It is known that due to the multiple marriages of her parents, her grandmother sent Manwara Begum Sohagi to the rehabilitation center in the hope of improving her future. It is alleged that last few days Sohagi came home and complained to her grandmother that there is no health care at the center and that there is extreme mismanagement and torture. His life was extinguished there when he was only 10 years old. In this regard, Rozina Begum, the mother of the deceased Sohagi, complained and said, “We are poor people.” I let my daughter study to become like a human being. They killed him a few days ago. My child called me and told me that mother beat me and I will not stay here. Then I said, mother, stay for one more month. After this month, I will delete your name and admit you to another place. He also complained, when I said this – when I called madam, madam did not want to call my daughter. Children are tortured. My child has fever. They needed to inform us. But they didn’t tell us. When our child has cough and fever, mom says this is what happened to me. But the madams did not tell us even if they had a fever. I want to know how my child died. Even you will find out how it died sitting here. Sohagi’s father Sohag Molla complained that we were not told why my daughter died. Without informing us they have committed a great crime. Because I am the father of that child. Why didn’t our phone say that your daughter is sick, come and take her. They called us from that house around 11-12 o’clock and told us that your daughter died. Meanwhile, the manager of the rehabilitation center, Biplab Saha, said that the girl’s name is Sohagi, she is 9 years old. He died around 8 am. After being informed, his family came and took him. However, he denied the torture and medical negligence
