Tidewater floods 3 villages in Khulna
The high tides have caused water levels in the rivers of Khulna to rise by 1.5 to 2 feet above normal under the influence of the full moon.
The pressure from the water has broken the dam of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) in Deluti, Paikgachha upazila, allowing saltwater to flood the local areas.
The villages of Kalinagar, Harin Khola, and Darun Mallik have been inundated.
This has resulted in newly planted paddy and seeds being submerged, along with homes and buildings.
Md Ashraful Alam, executive engineer of BWDB Khulna-2, stated that due to the tidal pressure, water levels in various points of Khulna’s rivers, including Rupsa and Chalna, have risen by 1.5 to 2 feet above normal.
The breach in the dam at Deluti has allowed water to enter local areas.
Local residents reported that over 300 feet of the WAPDA road on the southern side of Kalinagar Bawali house in the 22nd Polder of Deluti Union has been damaged. The breach occurred due to the high tidal pressure, and efforts to stop the water have been unsuccessful, said the executive engineer
As a result, water continues to enter the local area, with the entire 22nd Polder expected to be inundated by Thursday.
Immediate action by the BWDB and relevant authorities is needed.
This area was also affected by the cyclone Amphan.
Amirul Azad, the acting officer at the Khulna Meteorological Office, stated that due to active monsoon winds, rain continues in the coastal areas. Although rainfall in Khulna’s coastal areas is relatively less, the pressure from the tides remains high.
This situation is likely to continue for a few more days, he added
