Md. Habib, Dimla (Nilphamari) representative: The farmers of Dimla are interested because of the land and environment suitable for coppice cultivation and profitable cultivation in a short period of time. A handful of farmers have been cultivating coppice in Dakshin Sundar Khata village of Balapara union in the upazila for several years. Last year also they got double profit by cultivating coppice. According to that, Agam Aman cut Ufshi Bri-type paddy and cultivated coppice in this year as well. Some have planted cauliflower on the land and some have tied it. At present, per kg copy is being sold in the market for 70 to 80 taka. Due to high price of potato seeds and high cost of production, farmers are inclined towards coppice cultivation. On the surface, the farmers have had a busy time tending to the coppice. Many are preparing the land for cultivation and planting. Many have already planted copies.
Talking to Lalon Mia, a farmer of Dakshin Sundar Khata village of the upazila, it is known that he has cultivated cauliflower on two bigha land. After harvesting the paddy, some more land will be planted. He said that 4000 saplings should be planted per bigha (33 percent) of land. After transplanting from seedling to the land, it will cost 10 taka for each seedling, so it will cost forty thousand taka per bigha. If the weather is good and if I get the right market price then my copy of one bigha land will be sold for Tk 1 lakh 20 thousand.
Jahangir Islam, a farmer of the same village, said that coppice cultivation is profitable but requires a large amount of money in the beginning, organic and chemical fertilizers, skilled workers are needed for maintenance, but skilled workers are scarce. Even if available, wages are high.
Farmer Sohail Islam said that because of the plantation of coppice in a short period of time, cash can be obtained by selling coppice, and potato, almond or corn can be planted on that land by taking coppice. According to the coppice farmers, coppice farming is like saving money in the bank.
Farmer Ali Newaz, farmer Shahinur, farmer Dulal, farmer Habi and many other farmers have cultivated coppice in that area.
Dimla Upazila of Nilphamari District is an agricultural based economy. Here, various vegetables including coppice, rice, corn, potato, pepper, jute, wheat, almonds are grown and the agricultural products are supplied to different parts of the country by meeting the needs of the upazila.
In this regard, Upazila Agriculture Officer Mir Hasan Al Banna said, currently the demand and market price of vegetables is high and coppice can be produced from the land in a short time, so many farmers are interested in coppice cultivation. Our Assistant Agricultural Officers are providing initiatives and advice to the farmers in coppice cultivation from the Agriculture Department in the field.
