Both sides of the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge highway saw a traffic jam stretching over 15 kilometres after a head-on collision between a truck and a covered van left the truck’s driver and his assistant dead and the van’s driver seriously injured in Tangail’s Kalihati upazila early on Friday.
The deceased truck driver was Anwarul Islam, hailing from Thakurgaon. The identities of the other victims are yet to be confirmed.
Ataur Rahman of Elenga Fire Service and SI Shahadat Hossain of Bangabandhu Bridge east police station reported that the truck, heading north from Dhaka, collided head-on with the Dhaka-bound covered van from the north.
Three individuals were trapped in the two vehicles. Upon receiving the news, police and fire service personnel arrived at the scene and rescued them after a 30-minute effort.
The driver and helper trapped in the truck died at the scene. The injured person was taken to Tangail General Hospital.
After completing legal formalities, the bodies will be handed over to their families, the officials said.
Police said the accident also caused a severe traffic jam on the highway.
The vehicles involved in the crash have been removed, and police are working to resolve the congestion.
Authorities expect normal traffic flow to resume soon, police added.
